Vintage Sizing Guide

Size inconsitencies in vintage clothing

When shopping for vintage clothing, it’s essential to remember that sizing has evolved over the decades, influenced by various eras and styles. Additionally, the condition and amount of wear an item has experienced can affect its fit. Some items will even have incorrect tags making this even more difficult.

We try to convert measurements we take into a modern day equivalent (S/M/L Size 6/8/10 etc.) But this is still not 100% accurate.

To ensure you select the perfect piece, we provide detailed measurements for each item. We recommend measuring yourself against these specifications if you’re unsure about sizing.

Measurements We Take:

  • Pit to Pit: This measurement is taken from armpit to armpit across the chest, giving you an idea of the garment's width.
  • Pit to Cuff: This is the measurement from the armpit to the cuff of the sleeve, which helps gauge the sleeve length.
  • Total Length: This measures from the neckline to the bottom hem of the garment, providing a sense of the overall length.
  • Waist: This applies as normal to Jeans and trousers, these measurements may also be available for overalls and dungarees.
  • Inside Leg: This applies as normal to Jeans and Trousers, it is measured from the seam of the crotch to the bottom cuff of leg. This may vary due to different cuts of trouser. Not to be confused with Total leg length.
  • Total Leg Length: This is the measurement from the waist band of the item to the bottom leg cuff.

Some clothing may have slightly different measurements included in the listing such as dresses/skirts/hats etc. The measurements for these will be explained in the listing.

Always refer to these measurements when making a purchase, as they can significantly differ from contemporary sizing.
